The UK Government has withdrawn funding from Inverurie Railway Station that was intended to improve disability access at the station, which is currently extremely limited.
In May 2024, the previous Conservative Government included Inverurie Station in the Access for All programme, designed to improve accessibility at railway stations across the UK. The planned improvements for Inverurie included the installation of a lift, which would have made both platforms fully accessible from the station ticket office.
The decision to withdraw this funding is extremely disappointing and should be reversed. Inverurie is not the only station in Gordon and Buchan with serious accessibility issues. Insch Station, for example, still does not have step-free access to Platform One, and I am also campaigning for improvements there.
I have written to the Minister of State for Rail seeking a full justification for the decision to withdraw funding from Inverurie Station, and I am calling for this funding to be reinstated. Everyone deserves access to fully accessible public transport. It is unacceptable that in 2026 multiple railway stations still lack the basic infrastructure needed to support people with additional accessibility needs.
