Harriet Cross MP met with the Chief Executive of Offshore Energies UK David Whitehouse. Harriet said:
Too many times recently I have been told that the prospects for the sector’s future in the UK can be viewed in weeks or months, not years.
The Government acted to save British Steel - yet is, at best, dragging its feet and, at worst (but more realistically) expediting the decline of the sector which supports 200,000 UK jobs, is crucial to regional economies (esp in North East Scotland) and vital to our energy security.
The Oil & Gas sector isn’t the enemy. We will need oil & gas for years to come - the Government Minister again reiterated that this morning - but these words mean nothing if their actions don’t match.
Any move to offshore and import our oil and gas supplies at the expense of our domestic industry - at a higher carbon cost, to regions often with questionable working practices, and where the UK will not benefit from the jobs, tax take and economic input the industry supports is nothing but madness.
